A Fernie newcomer's perspective

by Meg

I arrived in Fernie a couple of months ago looking to stay for the winter season. I chose Fernie as I had been told by many people that Fernie was picturesque and that the people were welcoming and upon arriving into town I found it was not an exaggeration with the scenery being beautiful and people going out of their way to be friendly and helpful.

After spending time finding accommodation and a job I was a little bit at a loss as to what to do for the few weeks before the ski hill opened for the season. I asked in town at a few different places and found out that Fernie had a lot more going for it than just skiing and snowboarding. There always seems to be something to do in Fernie and I have found myself busy going out to one of the many bars, shopping, going to the movies or having dinner with newly made friends.  I have to confess that I have already become addicted to a few things about Fernie such as Beanpod coffee and Ghostriders hockey games!

Since the ski hill opened I have been kept busy trying to fit in as much skiing as I can between work and socializing and it is a challenge to find time to do it all. I have been having a great time on the hill and I am impressed with the amount of runs there are for skiers and boarders of all abilities. I am looking forward to a busy winter with more skiing and trying out all the activities I have not had a chance to try yet like curling, snowshoeing and dog sledding.
