Fernie ski walk shows evolution of ski and snowboard technology

You can take a trip down ski memory lane by visiting downtown Fernie’s ski and snowboard stores this month.

The self-guided heritage ski walk features Fernie Museum, Ski Base, Edge of the World, Straightline, Guides Hut, Board Stiff, Grow and Gear Hub - each have displays of historical ski and snowboard equipment that represent a different portion of snow sports technology evolution.

The Rossignol collection at Ski Base shows the evolution of the company’s first fiberglass racing skis from 1967 right up to the 2012 skis lining the store shelves.

It includes the sought-after Rossignol Bergundy with a clear base and red and white decal on the top and the tip, as made famous by Nancy Greene.

It also includes freestyle skis and downhill racing skis – one pair is 220 cms long!

Other exhibits in the ski walk include Edge of the World’s legendary snowboard collection, which is widely regarded as the best snowboard collection north of Salt Lake City and west of Toronto.

It has been put together by Edge of the World owner Greg Barrow, who was one of the original Burton suppliers.

Melissa Leno at Grow has collected a series of children’s skis, including a pair of wooden ones.

The Guide’s Hut has a history of touring skis, and Straightline shows the evolution of powder skis to this day.

The ski walk is part of the Fernie 50 years of skiing Heritage Week from March 18-24 which have been coordinated by a committee headed by Fernie Lodging Company and Fernie Vacation Properties owner Mike Delich.

See this article in The Free Press for more information on the heritage week events.
