Spring has Sprung, The Grass is Riz….Fernie Isn’t Just About Ski Vacations!

It’s spring time in the Rockies! The signs are everywhere…the ski resort is closed; snowboards, skis, boots and poles have been nostalgically stored away and mountain bikes, running shoes and golf clubs have happily re-entered the outside world!

With summer only 2 months away, the frightening thought of donning a bathing suit crept into my head as I stared at my mountain bike a few weeks ago…time to get into some spring training! The weather has warmed up – we’ve even had temps in the mid 20’s – time to get ’er done! Fernie is the perfect outdoor training venue with unlimited trails for walking, hiking and biking. Although there is still snow in them thar hills, the valley offers beautiful trails that meander along the majestic Elk River and circumnavigate the entire town. Start out nice and easy…you don’t want a spring injury that will hamper your summer activities! I should really listen to my own advice! My first bike ride of the season turned into 2 days of single track, logging road and highway riding totalling over 50kms! The legs were fine because of all the skiing I did this winter, but the cardio…well that’s another story! No injuries to report unless it’s possible to sprain a lung!

Fernie is also one of the most relaxing little resort towns to visit. If you’ve had a stressful winter, stuck in your office, didn’t have your usual ski vacation and no tropical getaway in sight, come play with us! We can find you a romantic getaway with spa treatments and private hot tubs – how about a cozy log cabin in the woods? Just remember to pack your running shoes, hiking boots and your bike to get started on your spring training!

Love Fernie in the Spring Time!

The five best intermediate trails in Fernie’s five bowls

The five best intermediate trails in Fernie’s five bowlsFernie is famous for its epic powder days and big mountain skiing, but don’t let that put you off the resort if you or one of your family members is just starting out as a skier or snowboarder.

Fernie Lodging Company’s guide to the best intermediate blue trails in each bowl will ensure that you still see the best of the mountain, even if you don’t want to tackle black runs or mogul fields.

1. All the way home – Falling Star (Siberia Bowl)
Falling Star takes you from the top of the Timber Chair, right to the bottom of the mountain.
There are usually ungroomed areas at the side of the trail, so it’s a good trail to take if you are skiing with someone who isn’t ready to tackle powder yet, as they can stick to the groomer while you shred some freshies.
Keep up your speed for the long traverse at the bottom.

2. All the way down – Polar Circus to Currie Powder to Diamond Back to the base (Currie bowl)
Thanks to the new Polar Peak lift, which opened in 2012, you can ski the most vertical in the Canadian Rockies at 3550 vertical feet.
The Polar Peak chair sets you down at the summit of the Lizard Range, giving a view across to Lake Koocanusa, to Glacier National Park in Montana and as far as Kananaskis National Park in Alberta on a clear day.
The intermediate blue trail Polar Circus takes you all the way down from the summit to the famous Currie Powder trail, a beautiful powder trap.
Continue to the blue/green Diamond Back to return to the base of Fernie Alpine Resort.

3. Worth the hike for the trees – Milky Way (Timber Bowl)
This trail requires some effort to get to it – but is worth the grunt for wide-spaced trees set on a ridge that catches wind-sifted powder even several days after a snow storm.
From the top of the White Pass Chair, head down Shakey’s Acres on skier’s right. After a traverse you will come to Milky Way – a short hike up to the top will reward you with a fun ski down the gladed tree run.

4. Worth the traverse – Cascade (Lizard Bowl)
Finding Cascade is as simple as ABC – turn left after you get off the Bear Chair, and start traversing – the first trail you pass is Arrow, the second is Bow, the third is Cascade.
Cascade is a wide, undulating trail that catches great powder after a snowstorm and stays soft no matter what.
If you enjoy it, do a lap of the Bear Chair and try Arrow, Bow or the fourth trail, Dancer.

5. Too good to pick just one – Cruiser, Cedar Centre, Trillium, Blueberry (Cedar Bowl)
These trails all come off the Cedar High Traverse from the top of Bear Chair, and are all wide, open trails with great views across the valley. Simply get going and drop in when you are tired of traversing.

Fernie ski walk shows evolution of ski and snowboard technology

Fernie ski walk shows evolution of ski and snowboard technologyYou can take a trip down ski memory lane by visiting downtown Fernie’s ski and snowboard stores this month.

The self-guided heritage ski walk features Fernie Museum, Ski Base, Edge of the World, Straightline, Guides Hut, Board Stiff, Grow and Gear Hub – each have displays of historical ski and snowboard equipment that represent a different portion of snow sports technology evolution.

The Rossignol collection at Ski Base shows the evolution of the company’s first fiberglass racing skis from 1967 right up to the 2012 skis lining the store shelves.

It includes the sought-after Rossignol Bergundy with a clear base and red and white decal on the top and the tip, as made famous by Nancy Greene.

It also includes freestyle skis and downhill racing skis – one pair is 220 cms long!

Other exhibits in the ski walk include Edge of the World’s legendary snowboard collection, which is widely regarded as the best snowboard collection north of Salt Lake City and west of Toronto.

It has been put together by Edge of the World owner Greg Barrow, who was one of the original Burton suppliers.

Melissa Leno at Grow has collected a series of children’s skis, including a pair of wooden ones.

The Guide’s Hut has a history of touring skis, and Straightline shows the evolution of powder skis to this day.

The ski walk is part of the Fernie 50 years of skiing Heritage Week from March 18-24 which have been coordinated by a committee headed by Fernie Lodging Company and Fernie Vacation Properties owner Mike Delich.

Visitor review: Calgary family’s ski weekend at Juniper Lodges, Fernie Alpine Resort

Visitor review Calgary family’s ski weekend at Juniper Lodges Fernie Alpine ResortShauna MacDonald and Shane Hooker of Calgary stayed at Fernie Lodging Company’s Timberline Lodge for a ski weekend with their two-and-a-half year old son Avery in late February.

During their ski weekend Fernie Alpine Resort received an incredible 54cm of snow over 24 hours.

Here is Shauna’s account of their trip.

“We had been discussing Fernie for some time and had always heard great things about the area. My husband and I used to be avid skiers growing up, but we both had not skied for 14 years!

“We wanted to ensure our son experienced the mountains like we did as children so thought this would be a great way to get back into skiing and also see skiing through the eyes of our son.

“We took advantage of the great snow conditions and weather and had Avery out on skis for the first time. He loved the magic carpet and skiing with his dad. The smile on his face was unbelievable.

“In the afternoons, Avery went to the resort’s day care and Shane and I skied for half-days.

The first afternoon was amazing. Conditions could not have been better and we both got right back into the love of the sport.

“The day care facility was good and so we were able to ski and enjoy ourselves knowing Avery was in great hands.

“One evening we booked dinner at Picnic restaurant in downtown Fernie and had a great evening out. Food and service were fantastic.”

“Juniper Lodge was nice – newly built and good location. Our favourite feature was access to the hill.  We took advantage of the whirlpool and Avery actually really enjoyed it!

“Fernie seems like a destination for any demographic. New or experienced skiers certainly can enjoy the resort. We saw couples, families, groups of friends, etc all across the mountain. A great place for anyone really.

“I would say the same for Timberline Lodges. Avery made some new friends while we were there, and we also saw young groups staying there for the weekend. It’s an intimate setting with a lot to offer. We hope to be back very soon!”

Quarter or full ownership shares of Juniper Lodge are now available from $59,900.

Five Fernie experiences you shouldn’t miss

Five Fernie experiences you shouldn’t miss1. Ski all five bowls

There is something for every skier in Fernie Alpine Resort’s five bowls – Timber Bowl for fans of steep tree skiing, Currie Bowl for powder hounds, Lizard Bowl for mellow trees and wide trails, Cedar Bowl for moguls and trees.
It might take you more than one ski weekend to cover all that terrain – better extend your ski vacation to a week!

2. Watch a Fernie Ghostriders home game
Fernie’s community hockey team the Fernie Ghostriders is known throughout the KIJHL junior B league for having the loudest, most supportive fans.
While some junior B teams struggle to draw more than a few dozen supporters out to a home game, the Ghostriders arena regularly sees 1100 capacity crowds during ski weekend home games.
Don’t forget to get a pint of Fernie beer, a tray of poutine from the concession and a 50/50 ticket.

3. Shop in Fernie’s historical downtown
Downtown Fernie was destroyed by two wildfires in 1904 and 1908 – so the community rebuilt Victoria Avenue in brick, with a magnificent view of the Lizard Range – little knowing that a century later the street would overlook one of the top ski resorts in Canada!
Today Second Avenue has become a thriving shopping district – visit the Livery for designer homeware, Beanpod for handmade chocolate, Le Grand Fromage for fine cheeses, Bunches for gifts and Polar Peek for a wide selection of books including many on the local area.
If you want a souvenir of your ski weekend in Fernie, local artists are showcased at the Fernie Artists Co op.
You can watch a 100-year-old letterpress in action at Clawhammer Studio in the Ghostrider Trading Store and buy engraved glassware at Stephanie’s Glass.
If you need new ski gear to improve your ski weekend, check out the ski and snowboard stores including Ski Base, Commit, Straightline, Gear Hub, Edge of the World and Guides Hut.

4. Eat at Fernie’s food stores and restaurants
Fernie has enough food places to ensure you don’t have to eat in the same place twice throughout the whole of your ski vacation.
On Second Avenue, Picnic restaurant sources local products served with a Mediterranean twist, The Brickhouse bar and grill has a range of beers on draft and an extensive wine menu and The Northern serves good pub grub.
Loaf Bakery, near the highway, sells fresh bread and pastries handmade in their Fernie kitchens, fresh sandwiches and salads and Italian-style pizzas.

5. Snowshoe or XC ski
Get another perspective on Fernie – put on a pair of snowshoes or cross country skis and tackle one of the many trails that run up, down, across and around the Elk Valley.
You should ask Fernie Lodging Company’s guest services for advice on the best trail to suit your group’s ability and the time available on your ski weekend.
You can rent snowshoe or cross country ski equipment at Fernie’s ski stores.

Five Griz Days events you should not miss

Five Griz Days events you should not missThe Griz Days winter festival is coming up this weekend in Fernie, when the whole community pays homage to the snowmaking powers of the Griz.
Local legend has it that the Griz is a giant man who lives in the Lizard Range above Fernie Alpine Resort and brings the powder snow that makes Fernie one of
the top ski resorts in Canada.

Combine a ski weekend in Fernie with one of these great Griz Days activities – don’t forget to drop in to Fernie Vacation Properties real estate office at Timberline Lodges 1-5pm Friday and Saturday.

Find out more at the Griz Days Facebook page

1. Wear your Griz Pin – or risk arrest!
Griz Pins are now on sale around Fernie – $3 each of two for $5. These collectible pins are your ticket to freedom during Griz Days – as long as you are wearing one, the Griz Sheriff won’t arrest you, but beware the sheriff and his deputies if you are caught without one – you don’t want to spend your ski weekend in the Griz Jail!

This year the Griz pins also act as your ticket into a draw to win $1000.

2. Friday night – Shred Kelly on outdoor stage

Shred Kelly is one of those bands that will get the whole family dancing – and they are headlining at the CP Station Square stage on Friday night.

The stage will be packed with performers from 6-10pm – also lined up for your entertainment will be the preliminary stage of Commit Rail Jam competition.

3. Griz Parade this Saturday night

Downtown Fernie becomes a celebration as businesses and community groups parade along Second Avenue in honour of the Griz from 6:30pm – it’s a great way to round of your ski weekend at Fernie.

As this is Fernie Alpine Resort’s 50th anniversary, the parade will include historical snowcats and vintage grooming machines.

The parade will be led by honorary parade marshalls Linda and Heiko Socher, the former owners of the ski hill who are credited with building it up from a small community hill to being one of the top ski resorts in Canada.

Afterwards, there will be a family firework display, dance performances, music and the Commit Rail Jam finals.

4. Extreme Griz Competition

The Griz represents Fernie’s best qualities – fun-loving, at home in the outdoors, and someone who will do anything to get to Fernie’s fantastic powder.

Each year men and women from the community compete to be named Extreme Griz – contests include bear-riding, axe throwing, snow shoe obstacle race, fire lighting and pancake eating.

Cheer on the contestants at the events on the ski hill and around town, and see the Griz crowning ceremony after the Griz Days parade on Saturday.

5. Sunday at 1pm, Fernie Alpine Resort base area – 29th Downhill Dummy competition

The aim of the game is to create an unmanned craft that can slide down the mountain and get air off a kicker in the most imaginative way.

Come along and watch how much carnage this year’s contestants can create.

Fernie Factor brings Family Week powder – and it’s still coming!

Fernie Factor brings Family Week powder - and it's still coming! When there is low snowfall in the forecast for Fernie Alpine Resort, you’ll see frequent Fernie skiers shrug and say: “The Fernie Factor will bring it!”

The Fernie Factor is the unique combination of Fernie’s microclimate, altitude, and its location just west of the Continental Divide where cold Arctic winds collide with moist winds from the Pacific.

It’s a phenomenon that unpredictably and regularly brings large amounts of fresh powder overnight to Fernie Alpine Resort when the forecast is for flurries.

The most extreme example of this came in January this year when 9cms forecast snow turned into 94cm in 18 hours!

That’s why a number of businesses in Fernie have a 20cm powder day rule in their employment contracts – if there is more than 20cm fresh snow in the snow report, their staff don’t have to come to work until noon.

The snow that the resort has received this week is a great example of why the Fernie Factor is so revered by skiers.

As well as bringing more snow every night than was forecast, there was enough wind each day to gather fresh snow in deep pockets at the edge of each run, giving the powder day experience all week.

By midweek there was even some sunshine for lucky skiers in Fernie for their family week ski vacation.

And it’s still falling – over 5cm of light, dry powder fell on Friday morning, and there is more forecast for this weekend.
