Visitor review: Calgary family’s ski weekend at Juniper Lodges, Fernie Alpine Resort
Shauna MacDonald and Shane Hooker of Calgary stayed at Fernie Lodging Company’s Timberline Lodge for a ski weekend with their two-and-a-half year old son Avery in late February.
During their ski weekend Fernie Alpine Resort received an incredible 54cm of snow over 24 hours.
Here is Shauna’s account of their trip.
“We had been discussing Fernie for some time and had always heard great things about the area. My husband and I used to be avid skiers growing up, but we both had not skied for 14 years!
“We wanted to ensure our son experienced the mountains like we did as children so thought this would be a great way to get back into skiing and also see skiing through the eyes of our son.
“We took advantage of the great snow conditions and weather and had Avery out on skis for the first time. He loved the magic carpet and skiing with his dad. The smile on his face was unbelievable.
“In the afternoons, Avery went to the resort’s day care and Shane and I skied for half-days.
The first afternoon was amazing. Conditions could not have been better and we both got right back into the love of the sport.
“The day care facility was good and so we were able to ski and enjoy ourselves knowing Avery was in great hands.
“One evening we booked dinner at Picnic restaurant in downtown Fernie and had a great evening out. Food and service were fantastic.”
“Juniper Lodge was nice – newly built and good location. Our favourite feature was access to the hill. We took advantage of the whirlpool and Avery actually really enjoyed it!
“Fernie seems like a destination for any demographic. New or experienced skiers certainly can enjoy the resort. We saw couples, families, groups of friends, etc all across the mountain. A great place for anyone really.
“I would say the same for Timberline Lodges. Avery made some new friends while we were there, and we also saw young groups staying there for the weekend. It’s an intimate setting with a lot to offer. We hope to be back very soon!”
